7950 Electric Soil Sterilizer (T3950)

Not Available

Kill harmful soil organisms and weed seeds

Pasteurize or sterilize your potting soil. Pasteurizing is partial sterilization to kill most harmful organisms, but not beneficial ones (140-160° F, approx. 20 min.). Sterilizing at 180° F kills all soil organisms and most weed seeds. The Soil Sterilizer is built of heavy-gauge aluminized steel and has a capacity of 1 cubic foot of soil. The heating elements are sheathed for protection and sealed against moisture. Thermostat range: 100°-200° F. Prewired with a 6 ft. grounded power cord. Rated: 500 watts, 4-1/2 amps. Weight: 27 lbs. Instructions included.

Temporarily unavailable. Check back soon.

Trouble Shooting:
We recommend a starting point of 160° for your first batch of soil. If too many weeds appear, then raise the thermostat setting to 170° and continue to raise the temperature until desired results are achieved. A lower temperature setting will be quicker and each batch will cost less. A few scattered weeds may be caused by recontamination of the soil or may be more difficult to kill than is practical.

Common Recommendations:
It is important that you choose the best temperature to sterilize soil in your Pro-Grow Sterilizer. Getting rid of weeds and certain insects is, of course, why you sterilize soil and we suggest the following:

  1. Do not operate sterilizer unless it is loaded with soil.
    • Remove soil from sterilizer while it is still warm.
    • For best results, soil should not be allowed to cool in sterilizer.
  2. Soil should not be too dry or too moist.
    • If it is too dry, it will take too long to get the job done.
    • If it is too wet, it will be difficult to unload the sterilizer.
    • The moisture condition of potting soil is correct when a ball can be made without leaving mud on your hands.
The time required to sterilize a batch of soil will vary with temperature and moisture content of the soil when it is loaded. The pilot light will go out when soil in the sterilizer comes up to the temperature set point on the thermostat.

This Carton Contains:
1 – Sterlizer
1 – Sterlizer Top
3 – Sterlizer Handles
12 – 8/32 x ½” Sheet Metal Screws

To prepare your Pro-Grow Electric Soil Sterilizer for use:
  1. Attach handles with the screw provided to the pre-punched holes in the top and both sides.
  2. Power Supply: This sterilizer draws 4-1/2 amps at 120 volts and the electrical rating is 500 watts.
A standard 125 volt 15 amp 3 wire grounding receptacle with parallel slots will accept the plug on this sterilizer.

General Safety Rules:
  1. Don’t abuse cord: Never yank cord to disconnect from receptacle. Keep cord from heat, oil, and sharp edges.
  2. Disconnect unit: When not in use or before servicing.
  3. Voltage Warning: Before connecting the unit to a power source (receptacle, outlet, etc.) be sure the voltage supplied is the same as that specified on the sterilizer nameplate. A power source with voltage greater than that specified for the unit can result in serious injury to the user – as well as damage to the unit. If in doubt, DO NOT PLUG IN THE STERILIZER.
  4. Extension Cords: When using an extension cord be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the current your unit will draw. When unit is used outdoors, use only extension cords suitable for use outdoors and so marked.
In no case is an extension cord, plug, cap, receptacle, outlet or adapter that is not a three wire grounded unit to be used.
